Our Mission

We’re on a mission to build the world’s most extensive collection of language data and use data-driven approaches to provide solutions that enable better communication, break down barriers and facilitate greater collaboration between the entire human population.

Our Story

Pai was founded in April 2019 by two multilingual entrepreneurs, Josef Roberts, and Simon Parry-Williams, who met while completing their masters degrees at Bangor University in Wales. We noticed that the vast majority of languages in the world had no digital learning courses and that many language learners were not learning efficiently. To push back against the decline of linguistic diversity we set up Pai, and decided to use NLG (natural language generation) to create data-driven courses for the world’s languages that enable smart language learning for anyone, anywhere.

Building the world’s most extensive language database has also allowed us to offer other products and services to governments, authorities and organisations, where we can increase their diversity and inclusion to better help them service their customers. The team has since grown, secured funding, picked up awards and begun raising our first round of seed funding. We have ambitious plans to continue this growth and change the world’s relationship to language: now is a great time to get involved.

Why we're doing it

Everyone at Pai shares a strong belief in the value of linguistic diversity and the equal value that each language brings to humanity.

This sits at the core of everything we do, whether it’s providing digital language courses to individuals around the world, or delivering high-quality data to governments and organisations that enable them to better service their audiences. We are all sharing the same world, and Pai's aim is to protect our shared linguistic inheritance.

Our founders

Josef Roberts

Polyglot and language lover - Josef has been learning and working with languages for as long as he can remember. Coming back from living in Shanghai in 2016, Josef had one goal in mind, to find a way to share his love for languages, especially minority ones, with the rest of the world.

Since meeting Simon during his MBA in Bangor, they've worked together to make Pai a reality.

Simon Parry-Williams

Bilingual and problem solver, Simon knows the personal benefits, cultural importance and consumer impact of learning a second language, having learnt Welsh in his childhood.

Meeting Josef during his MA at Bangor University, he noticed the gap in the market for a data-driven language-focused business, and have they worked together since to make Pai what it is today.

What's next for Pai?

This summer we’re closing an investment round and expanding our team, which means we’ll be hitting the ground running in the autumn when we launch more products and services, with even more languages available!

We’re currently focused on increasing our initial client base and delivering an exceptional service for them, while we continue working on our product roadmap in the background. There are plenty of exciting things coming over the 5 years, so now is a great time to get involved.
